FADE IN:
1 INT: BANK LOBBY - DAY 1
A man in a dark suit lies face down. A pool of blood spreads
from below his head, increasing until it looks like his head
is resting on a red map of Australia. Noise fills the air,
panic, screaming and a repeating alarm, rapidly moving
footsteps.
2 EXT: ALLEY - DAY 2
A man in a dark suit sits in the driver's seat of large
sedan, fumbling with a rabbit's foot key-chain, he looks
across the passenger seat and out the window. The alarm
sound is very loud, slamming the chain against the steering
column, he twists his hand and the engine comes alive.
3 EXT: STREET - DAY 3
A man in a dark suit sprints past other pedestrians, he
breathes in short little puffs. In his hand is a leather gym
bag, it swings as he runs.
4 EXT: STREET2 - DAY 4
Another man in a dark suit sprints, with a skid he stops,
looks left and then right, then sprints on.
5 EXT: ALLEY - DAY 5
The man is looking across the passenger seat and out the
passenger window, below his breath he mutters something we
can't hear, punctuated with revs of the engine. There is a
loud thud, his head twists to face front where there is the
man with the gym bag, panting for breath, arms supporting
him, slouched against the hood. The man in the car lets out
a tiny scream, then speaks.
LEO
Louie, Louie, wha' happen ?
Still panting Louie slides around the front and drops into
the passenger seat.
LOUIE
(panting)
Drive, Leo ... GO!
LEO
But what about Frankie ?
LOUIE
Drive, Leo
LEO
What about Johnny ?
Louie pulls a shiny pistol from beneath his jacket and points
it at Leo's head.
LOUIE
Just fuck'n drive this thing willya!
6 EXT: STREET3 - DAY 6
The third man is still running, something tells us that he's
not sure where to go. From a side street, a long dark sedan
appears moving fast up behind. As it pitches hard from the
turn a hubcap works loose and runs free. The car runs up
behind the third man, it pulls next to him and then a little
in front. He glances to his side. The car locks up and
screeches to a smoky halt beside the man.
LOUIE
Get in.
The runner stops a moment,
JOHNNY
Damn right.
and pulls open the back door on the passenger side, closing
it just as the car pulls away loudly.
7 INT: SEDAN - DAY 7
Leo is at the wheel, Louie is muttering into thin air beside
him, Johnny is sat behind Louie propping himself on the back
of the driver's chair and panting. He takes a moment to
catch his breath.
JOHNNY
(panting)
Where's Frankie?
Leo checks the mirror then turns his head to Louie, who is
still muttering.
LEO
You want me to go around the block, see
if he ran the other way..?
JOHNNY
Louie, where is he?
Suddenly calm, Louie reaches into his front breast pocket and
pulls out a pair of sunglasses.
LOUIE
Just hit the freeway, Leo. Frankie's
dead.
Leo and Johnny both look at Louie who opens up his sunglasses
and puts them on.
LEO
He's dead?
JOHNNY
son-of-a...
LEO
Whaddya mean dead?... Louie
Whaddya mean ?
Leo's arms are gripping the wheel, as he speaks the car rocks
a little from side to side.
LOUIE
Calm down a little, you're gonna give us
away.
As he speaks Louie scans the street ahead.
LEO
Frankie ... Dead. How could this have
happened? Huh how could it have happened?
Louie pulls off his sunglasses and faces Leo.
LOUIE
(spitting)
Well let's see. We go in to rob the
place, one of the tellers gets cute and
hits the alarm, the shit hits the you-
know-what and in the panic one of the
guards puts a bullet in Frankie's head as
we're on the way out. I guess it could'a
happened something like that. Now lets
get on the freeway, get some miles
between us and this pissy little town or
we'll all be seein' Frankie real soon.
As he finishes Louie put his sunglasses back on. Leo checks
the mirror and looks ahead.
LEO
Poor Frankie.
LOUIE
Yes, poor Frankie. Now come on.
Johnny's head has been low this entire time he raises it and
brushes back his hair.
JOHNNY
Uh, Louie ?
Louie sighs.
LOUIE
Yeah,Johnny.
JOHNNY
Which guard got 'im ?
LOUIE
Whaddaya mean which one ?
JOHNNY
Well, I took the big one out with the but
of my gun 'soon as we went in, just like
the plan. That guy'll still be out cold.
LOUIE
Well then it musta' been the other one.
JOHNNY
The old guy?
LOUIE
He wasn't that old.
JOHNNY
Jesus, that guy was older'n my grandaddy,
he had white hair.
LEO
White hair?
JOHNNY
White hair.
Louie twists his head to face Johnny.
LOUIE
It wasn't white.
JOHNNY
Sure it was.
Louie faces forward.
LOUIE
No, it wasn't it was... it was.
LEO
White ?
LOUIE
Ashen.
JOHNNY
Ashen?
LOUIE
Ashen.
Leo frowns and shakes his head.
JOHNNY
What the hell color is Ashen ?
Louie appears to be getting a bit frustrated. He spaces out
his words.
LOUIE
Its like a very pale gray, like ashes.
JOHNNY
This guy's hair wasn't like ashes.
LEO
I never heard of a color like ashes
before
JOHNNY
Ashen? I don't think so, I think his hair
was white.
Louie pulls off the glasses, again.
LOUIE
Look, I don't care if you think his hair
was blue, the guard shot Frankie as we
were tryin' to get out, Frankie dropped
the bag, in front of me as he fell, I
picked it up and got the H-E double L
outta there. Now lets just shut up a
while 'til I figure out what we're gonna
do now.
The three fall silent for a moment, Leo looks troubled.
Johnny shakes his head, mumbling, and sits back in the seat.
LEO
I know what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna take
my cut an' open a bar. Me an' Frankie
are gonna be... partners.
JOHNNY
He dropped the bag in front of you,
Louie?
Louie lets out a big sigh.
LOUIE
That's right Johnny. As he was fallin',
plop right in front of me.
JOHNNY
But the plan was me then you then
Frankie. You were right behind me, I
remember you pushin' me out the door.
Louie pauses.
LOUIE
Well, yeah, but then I doubled back.
JOHNNY
You doubled back? What for? The plan was
me, you and then Frankie watchin' the
rear as we pulled out.
LOUIE
I know that was the plan, I made the
plan. But I had to double back real
quick.
JOHNNY
But why?
LEO
Yeah, Louie. How come?
LOUIE
Because I forgot my lighter. Okay? Let's
just drop it.
LEO
You don't smoke Louie.
Louie remains calm.
LOUIE
I was being sarcastic Leo, the truth is
that I thought I heard the big guard
coming to, so I doubled back to see that
Frankie got out; but it was too late, the
big guard got him.
Johnny and Leo both look grim.
LOUIE
Looks like you didn't hit him so hard
after all Johnny. It was a tough break
but don't let it rip you up.
Johnny's face is dark, he rubs his chin with his hand.
JOHNNY
I hit him pretty hard, he oughta be out
right now.
LOUIE
I saw you hit him, but he was a big son-
of-a.
Louie puts a hand on Leo's shoulder.
LOUIE
Now, come on here's the freeway, lets go.
It's what Frankie would've wanted.
Leo shrugs, with a sad smile.
LEO
Yeah, I guess.
JOHNNY
He was a good man, damn shame.
LOUIE
One o' the best. A true friend, but we
gotta get on now, like the Three
Musketeers all for one an one for all.
Agreed?
Johnny and Leo come around.
JOHNNY & LEO
Yeah!!
The sedan pulls up the freeway on-ramp.
LOUIE
Fellahs, all our troubles is over.
8 EXT: DESERT HIGHWAY - DAY 8
The dark sedan crawls into the bottom of the view, smoke
billows from the hood, Louie and Johnny are at the back
pushing the beast to the side of the highway. They are
sweaty and their clothes are disheveled.
JOHNNY
(panting)
Have, you, seen, this?
Louie swings his head to face Johnny who nods down at the
trunk lid that they have both been pushing against, next to
the Cadillac emblem written in chrome calligraphy is the word
"Diesel".
LOUIE
Wh... What?
JOHNNY
(nodding)
Yeah, good job we didn't have to go up
any hills, huh ?
They both straighten up, the car coasts to the side of the
road. Johnny and Louie brush dust off themselves. As the
car comes to a stop, Leo hops out and tries to open the hood,
recoiling as it burns his hand.
LEO
Oww! Don't worry I think I can get it
going, I should've checked all the fluids
... sorry, just let me take a look...
LOUIE
Don't bother, we aren't going any further
in that thing.
Louie takes the sunglasses out and puts them on.
JOHNNY
(bent over)
I think I'm gonna puke..
LOUIE
(to Leo)
Just prop up the hood, we'll wait for
another car.
Leo looks at the Cadillac.
LEO
What if they don't want to gives us a
ride somewhere Louie?
He looks to Louie who is examining his gun and then returns
it to his pocket.
LOUIE
What Leo?
LEO
Uh, nothing, forget it.
LOUIE
And take the plates off, stash 'em in the
trunk or something.
LEO
Yeah, yeah, sure.
Louie looks along the road, there is nothing at either end.
Leo busies himself with opening the hood, still hot it bums
him a few times but he endeavors. Johnny is straddling the
long line in the road, first doubled over, then he stretches
up spreads his arms straight out, exhaling heavily.
LOUIE
Lord?
JOHNNY
Very, funny.
LOUIE
You sick or somethin'?
JOHNNY
I'll live. Listen I been thinkin',
things don't look so good three guys
stuck in the middle of a desert highway
flagging down folks, no one's gonna stop
for the three of us.
Louie looks over at Leo, who is still working on the hood
latch. Louie moves close to Johnny and whispers.
LOUIE
You think we should... take care of
the...
He makes a gesture toward Leo while reaching into his pocket.
LOUIE
...extra baggage?
Johnny looks at Louie and then over to Leo.
JOHNNY
What? No, no I was thinking that while
one person waits by the car, the other
two should wait behind those bushes or
something, car'll stop for one person.
LOUIE
Okay, that'll work too,
(shouting)
Leo listen up we got a plan here.
Louie walks over to Leo, Johnny watches for a moment, then
follows.
9 EXT: CLEARING - DAY 9
Leo, Louie and Johnny appear from the thick bushes, into the
clearing. Louie is holding the bag.
LOUIE
Perfect, okay two of us wait here, one
out by the Caddy, anyone shows up just
whistle when they stop. Who's first
then...
They each look at each other.
LOUIE
Okay, me then, see you in a few.
He turns to re-enter the bushes.
JOHNNY
Uh, you want us to keep an eye on the
bag?
LOUIE
No, I don't mind, later.
Louie disappears into the bush. Leo looks into the sun and
wipes his brow, with a heavy sigh he sits cross legged in the
clearing, Johnny slowly paces back and forth in front of Leo.
LEO
You should rest Johnny, you don't took so
good.
JOHNNY
Well, I bet I look a helluva lot better
than Frankie does right about now.
Johnny continues pacing.
LEO
Poor Frankie.
Johnny stops.
JOHNNY
Leo, somethings wrong something...
LEO
Is it about the car? I said I was sorry,
I can't do any better than that.
JOHNNY
No, shut up a second. I wasn't sure
until just now but something's not right
about this whole thing. Frankie was last
out, Louie couldn't have seen him get
dropped, unless he was still inside.
LEO
Well, he did say he went back.
JOHNNY
Leo, you don't go back after the jobs
done, I don't care what you've dropped,
and how much was supposed to be in there
again?
Looking a little past Johnny, Leo speaks like a recitation.
LEO
Frankie said that Louie said there'd be
four hundred G's on account of the fact
that a big payroll company keeps a
reserve there that nobody's supposed to
know about. Four hundred G's. That's
what Louie told Frankie.
JOHNNY
That's how I remembered it too, but there
was no way four hundred grand in that
place.
Leo looks at Johnny.
LEO
No?
JOHNNY
No, no way. I figure maybe half that
much, maybe two fifty tops.
LEO
You think, you think they knew they were
gonna get hit? Maybe they got word.
Johnny shakes his head.
JOHNNY
If they knew, then they'd have laid on
more security. Nope, something here
definitely doesn't fit.
Leo frowns. He slowly shakes his head from side to side.
LEO
You oughta tell Louie.
JOHNNY
Tell him what? That I think he screwed up
the job, got Frankie killed and we're
gonna walk away with maybe half what we
were promised? I'll be eatin' his gun.
Leo slowly nods. Johnny brushes some dust off the ground and
sits.
LEO
Well, you should tell him something is
up.
JOHNNY
We're stuck in the middle of hell here
with a shot Cadillac, no water and no
prospects, I think he might have a clue
already that something is up.
LEO
Well, you should tell him something.
JOHNNY
I'm not gonna say this again Leo, I'm not
gonna tell him nothin' okay, you wanna
piss him off go right ahead. I'm not
gonna tell him...
LOUIE (O.S.)
Tell him what?
Louie is coming through the bushes. Leo jumps up.
LEO
Uh, nothin' right? Johnny? We weren't
gonna tell you nothin'.
JOHNNY
I think maybe I got food poisoning.
Feels like my belly's on fire. I didn't
want to tell you, we got enough problems,
right Leo?
Leo nods, Louie comes completely out of the bushes and into
the clearing. He is carrying the bag.
JOHNNY
Hour up already?
LOUIE
Nah, I just gotta take a leak.
Louie looks at Leo.
LOUIE
Go fill in for me for a few minutes will
ya?
Leo looks at Louie and then Johnny, then back at Louie.
LEO
Uh, sure, okay. You want me to take the
bag?
Louie looks at the bag in his grip.
LOUIE
I'll keep it with me, here with Johnny.
LEO
(nodding)
Uh, Okay then, see you later.
Leo enters the bushes making a few sounds as he is poked by
branches. Louie crosses the clearing and put the bag down
just in front of Johnny, then he steps a few feet past Johnny
and begins to take a leak. Johnny looks at the bag and then
at Louie's back.
JOHNNY
You shot Frankie.
LOUIE
Yup, yes I did.
JOHNNY
Christ...
LOUIE
Can you wait just a sec. I'm tryin' to
concentrate.
Johnny glares at the bag in front of him. A moment passes
and then Louie turns around zipping his pants.
JOHNNY
Frankie was one of us Lou.
LOUIE
Don't be so old fashioned, remember what
they say about honor among thieves.
JOHNNY
Yeah, that there's no such thing.
LOUIE
Right, Frankie knew that. Things went a
bit wrong, in the same situation he
would've done the same thing.
Johnny turns from the bag to Louie. And looks at him hard.
JOHNNY
You think so?
LOUIE
Now, what to do about Leo. What do you
suggest.
JOHNNY
What to do about Leo?
LOUIE
Well, he got us stranded here.
Louie sweeps his arm across the line of vision.
LOUIE
And sooner or later that car's gonna be
spotted by someone who's gonna call the
highway patrol.
He looks into the sky.
LOUIE
Do they have those police planes out
here?
JOHNNY
Why do we have to do anything to Leo?
Stuff's gone all out of whack I know,
but...
LOUIE
The bag's light John, there's not enough
for...
JOHNNY
I know, I saw you empty all the drawers,
I figure there's maybe two fifty. Three
ways that's still...
LOUIE
It's less, Maybe two-ten, a grand or so
either way. Two ways its pretty good,
but three...
JOHNNY
Damn, (beat) Leo though, I mean ... Leo
though.
LOUIE
All he had to do was get us some wheels
and get us away, he stole a diesel that
crapped out on us John, he didn't hold up
his side of the bargain.
JOHNNY
(drawn out)
Leo, but, I, but, Leo.
LOUIE
I'll do it. Really I don't mind. I just
want you to agree with it, help me get
him into the trunk afterwards.
Johnny looks at the bag.
JOHNNY
I don't know, Louie, do we have to kill
him, there has to be another way. We
could maybe leave him.
LOUIE
If no one finds him he'd die out here
anyway, and if some one does he'd tell
the cops all about us to keep his ass out
of jail.
JOHNNY
Leo wouldn't do that.
Louie takes out his gun and checks it again.
LOUIE
Only one way to know for sure.
JOHNNY
Look, I tell you what, let me think about
it for an hour or so, come up with a
plan.
LOUIE
And if you don't?
JOHNNY
I will, just promise me you won't do
anything for an hour.
LOUIE
One hour.
Johnny glances at the bag, picks himself up and then heads
towards the bushes.
10 EXT: DESERT HIGHWAY - DAY 10
Leo is walking the line in the middle of the road like a
tightrope, he 'falls' to one side regularly. Johnny comes
out of the bushes.
JOHNNY
All change Leo.
LEO
Not a single car the whole time.
He approaches the bushes and braces to enter.
JOHNNY
Leo, what's that old saying about honor
among thieves?
LEO
That there isn't any?
He enters the bushes.
JOHNNY
Oh, yeah, Leo. That's what I thought.
Leo disappears into the bushes. Johnny pats himself down
and, from a breast pocket, pulls out a packet of cigarettes.
He taps the pack against his other hand, three cigarettes
fall out and to the ground.
JOHNNY
Shit.
He looks down at the cigarettes and into then into the mouth
of the packet. He screws up the pack and drops it to the
ground. He walks around the Cadillac and into the highway.
The road is empty in either direction.
The sun beats down upon the blacktop, riding above the road
is it's own hazy reflection. Johnny walks the line in the
road like Leo did before him, arms outstretched, a few paces
one way. Stop. Turn. A few paces the other way. At the
side of the road a rabbit has stopped to watch. Johnny spots
the rabbit and approaches it with slow steps.
JOHNNY
Come here fellah, come on now.
Johnny crouches and begins to waddle to the rabbit.
JOHNNY
I won't hurt'cha.
The rabbit does not move. Johnny waddles closer, closer,
closer. The rabbit does not move.
JOHNNY
That's right, hold right there.
OLD WOMAN (O.S.)
Are you alright down there?
Johnny spins around to see, the old woman. She is sitting in
a small run-down economy car.
JOHNNY
Ma'am?
OLD WOMAN
I saw you walkin' all funny. Thought to
myself Mae, poor young man's gone a bit
soft from the sun.
JOHNNY
Ma'am?
MAE
I said... Look do you need a ride into
town son? Is anyone else with you, I can
drive y'all. Son?
Johnny has stood up, he brushes the dust from his jacket.
CUT TO:
Johnny, Leo and Louie are together in the road, Leo turns to
Louie.
LEO
What if they don't want to gives us a
ride somewhere Louie?
He looks to Louie who is examining his gun and then returns
it to his pocket.
CUT TO:
Johnny looks at the old woman, she is looking into his face.
OLD WOMAN
Son?
JOHNNY
Uh, no. No thank you Ma'am. I'm just
takin' a little rest right here.
He gestures to the Cadillac.
JOHNNY
Let'n the car cool down a little before I
head off.
OLD WOMAN
You sure you're okay?
Johnny straightens out his clothes.
JOHNNY
Yes, ma'am, just fine.
The old woman puts the car in gear.
JOHNNY
Wouldn't want to hold you...
The car moves away.
JOHNNY
Up.
Dust from the car's wake kicks up around Johnny who turns to
face the side of the road. The rabbit there sees him, turns
and hops away. Brushing off dust, Johnny walks over to the
side of the Cadillac, and crouches by the three cigarettes.
The cigarettes lie next to each other, one of them is bent at
the filter. Johnny picks it up and holds it between his
thumb and forefinger about a foot in front of his face.
JOHNNY
Sorry Leo.
He drops the broken cigarette to one side. In the dust
Johnny draws a circle around the two remaining 'healthy'
cigarettes. After a moment he picks up the broken cigarette
and turns his head to face the bushes.
11 EXT: CLEARING - DAY 11
Johnny emerges from the bushes. Leo and Louie both turn to
face him. Leo stands up.
LEO
You killed Frankie?
Johnny is caught on a branch.
JOHNNY
What?
LOUIE
Come on Johnny, just admit it.
LEO
Why'd you do it, Johnny?
JOHNNY
What!?
Louie steps towards Johnny and puts on his sunglasses.
LOUIE
I'm sorry Johnny, I told Leo what you
told me.
Louie stretches out a hand and rests it on Johnny's shoulder.
LOUIE
I figured he had a right to know.
Johnny looks into the mirrors covering Louie's eyes, then to
Leo and back to Louie.
JOHNNY
Couldn't bear it huh?
LEO
How could you Johnny, how could you?
JOHNNY
Christ, Leo don't you see what's going on
here?
Leo begins to move from foot to foot, from side to side.
LEO
Suppose you tell me Johnny.
Louie lifts his hand from Johnny's shoulder.
LOUIE
Yeah, John. Suppose you tell him how you
killed Frankie for his share of the loot.
How you tried to get me to help you kill
Leo and split up his share between us,
Johnny.
Johnny turns his head to face Leo.
LEO
Yeah, suppose you tell me that Johnny.
Johnny slumps. Louie steps out from behind Johnny, he takes
a few steps towards the bag, he turns around facing Leo and
Johnny both.
JOHNNY
Leo, look at what's going on here,
Louie's playin' us for a coupla suckers.
If we pick ourselves off he gets the bag.
Louie offers no reaction to Johnny, Leo turns his head to
Louie, who shakes his head and shrugs.
LOUIE
So, what do you want to do Leo?
Johnny looks at Leo then Johnny.
LEO
Do?
LOUIE
We should take care of this, here. While
there's still time. Come on Leo, how do
you want to handle this?
JOHNNY
Leo, relax, we can talk about this.
LOUIE
It's a trick, come on Leo.
LEO
Uh, wait a...
LOUIE
Come on Leo. Shoot him.
LEO
What?
JOHNNY
Jesus, Leo don't listen.
LOUIE
For Frankie, Leo. Shoot him.
LEO
Uh...
LOUIE
Shoot him
LEO
uh...
LOUIE
Shoot him.
Leo's head twists from Louie to Johnny, over and over back
and forth.
Louie's voice build louder and louder.
LOUIE
SHOOT HIM!SHOOT HIM,SHOOT HIM.
Leo looks uneasy.
LOUIE
SHOOT HIM!SHOOT HIM,SHOOT HIM.
Leo begins to shake.
LOUIE
Goddamnit! Leo shoot him.
JOHNNY
Oh, Christ.
All in one movement they reach into their breast pockets,
they look at each other, and pull out pistols, in a sweep
each selects a target, Johnny levels his pistol at Louie,
Louie aims at Leo, and Leo points his gun at Johnny, they
freeze. For a moment, no one speaks. Johnny looks over at
Louie, while still aimed at Leo.
JOHNNY
Shit.
LOUIE
Exactly.
LEO
Nobody move.
JOHNNY
Right, okay lets just... What the hell's
going on here?
LOUIE
It seems obvious to me, Leo you're
pointing the right way now fire.
Johnny faces Leo.
JOHNNY
Uh, uh Leo, you fire at me and then Louie
caps you and gets it all.
LOUIE
Don't worry Leo, I'll cover you.
JOHNNY
Either way, Leo you die and Louie wins.
LEO
Just shut up, shut up I need to think.
LOUIE
Well, hurry up Leo it'll be nighttime in
six hours.
LEO
See, why 'you always do that? Make fun of
me, like I'm stupid or something.
LOUIE
Like, you're stupid? I never knew I was
that vague.
LEO
There you go, like I'm some kind of
idiot. I did my share of the work on
this job. Same as you.
JOHNNY
Sure, sure you did Leo.
LOUIE
Sure? Your share? What was your share
Leo?
LEO
I got the car, the getaway car. Stole it
and everything.
Leo swings his free arm in the direction of the road.
LOUIE
Oh, yes the getaway car, That big rusty
pimpmobile, with a diesel engine. In
case I forgot to thank you Leo, thank
you. Thank you for stealing a big, ugly
crappy car that belches out smoke.
LEO
Diesel cars are usually very reliable
and...
LOUIE
Let me explain a concept to you Leo,
Getaway. GET-A-WAY, you see the car you
steal is so that we...
Louie gestures at the three of them with his spare hand.
LOUIE(CONT)
Can get away.
Leo looks at Johnny who is nodding.
JOHNNY
He has a point there Leo.
Leo turns to look at Louie.
LEO
B...but.
LOUIE
Next time why don't you steal a cop car,
it'll be less conspicuous? Now shoot him
Leo, or I'll shoot you.
JOHNNY
(to Louie)
Why don't you?
LEO
What?
JOHNNY
Do it Louie, just like we planned. Ice
Leo and we'll split the cash. Just like
we planned before.
LEO
What?
LOUIE
No dice John, that was a limited time
offer.
LEO
What was?
LOUIE
Never mind Leo, just shoot him and lets
go.
JOHNNY
Wait up Leo. Louie, who shot Frankie.
Remember, I'm a good shot.
Louie looks at Johnny's gun. Leo turns to face him.
LOUIE
Fine, fine, Jesus can we just drop this.
Okay, I shot Frankie. There, I admit it,
ooh.
JOHNNY
You son-of-a...
LEO
But you told me that...
LOUIE
Hello? Leo? That was before Johnny had a
big gun in my face. Now if you'll just
fire that big gun in his face, we can
split the money and get the hell outta
here.
LEO
But how could you kill Frankie? He was
like a brother to us, all of us. How
could you..?
JOHNNY
Because he's a big asshole Leo, that's
why. Now put down the gun. He killed
Frankie, lets get him.
LOUIE
Wait, wait a second here. Lets not get
bent out of shape just because of Frankie
now. Let's be honest here, who really
gives a damn about Frankie, huh? What we
all care about is in that bag right
there.
All as one they look at the bag.
LOUIE
So, if we're gonna keep this crap up lets
at least admit to ourselves that the only
thing that really matters is the money
and who gets it. I know that I worked
hard on this job, and I want to get paid.
They look at each other. Time passes.
JOHNNY
Screw it!
LEO
What?
JOHNNY
Screw this and screw you both.
He lowers his gun.
JOHNNY
This is not worth it. It sure ain't
worth dyin' for so forget it. There's
not enough in that bag for putting up
with all this. So, it's yours, enjoy,l'm
outta here and I wish you two all the
best.
He drops the gun to the ground, it falls by the bag.
LOUIE
It's a trick Leo.
Louie turns his gun from Leo to Johnny.
LEO
No, Louie, we can let him go. More for
us that way right? No hard feelings.
JOHNNY
No hard feelings?
LOUIE
No. Leo it's a trick, we let him go and
the cops'll be right behind us, we can't
let him go.
Johnny looks at the two gunmen.
JOHNNY
Great, this really is fantastic. This
whole job has been a fiasco from the git-
go. Nice little job no one gets hurt. I
had to buy this stupid suit, which itches
like hell by the way. Put panty-hose
over my head because you forgot
stockings. Frankie gets killed, the bank
was low on cash. I had to run like an
idiot looking for you two. You stole
that stupid, stupid car. And now in the
middle of the desert, I'm gonna die for
my share of the money, which I already
gave up.
Johnny leans his hands on his legs and hunches forward,
panting. Leo and Louie look at each other, and then at
Johnny. A small plume of green smoke erupts from the bag.
LEO
What's that?
Louie looks at the bag and then at Johnny who has
straightened up, and is laughing.
JOHNNY
Who checked the bag?
LEO
For what?
LOUIE
Shit!
JOHNNY
You see Leo, at the bank they have a
little cannister, but they tape it up
like it's a wad of money. If they get
robbed they put it with the rest of the
money and off you go. Only this
cannister waits a while, then it goes
pop. It's full of a special dye that
ruins the money in the bag with it..
They look at the bag and the smoke.
JOHNNY
It's usually green dye.
LOUIE
Frankie was gonna check the bag.
JOHNNY
Ah, but. You killed Frankie.
LEO
Maybe it ain't all ruined, we can maybe
save some.
He crouches nest to the bag and take one of the straps.
JOHNNY
Don't bother Leo. You'll just get the
stuff on you. It doesn't wash out easy,
any lawman figure out what happened.
LOUIE
What a waste.
He puts his gun away and pulls his glasses out from his
pocket, they are broken at the nose, he tosses them away.
LOUIE
So what are we gonna do?
JOHNNY
We? a minute ago 'we' were gonna blow me
away. So 'we' can go and...
LEO
I wouldn't have shot you Johnny, honest.
LOUIE
I would've. Only there's no point now.
I guess we sort of need each other.
JOHNNY
For now, looks like you're right.
In the bushes there is a rustling noise, a hippy then
appears.
HIPPY
Hey, here you are.
LOUIE
(whisper)
Leo put your gun away, get up.
HIPPY
Saw your car by the road. Busted huh?
Johnny puts his foot over his gun.
LOUIE
Sure is. You couldn't give us a ride to
the next town could you?
HIPPY
Absolutely, 'be no problem.
LOUIE
Would you have room for all of us?
HIPPY
Absolutely, I've got a VW bus,'be no
problem.
JOHNNY
(whisper)
Leo, is that a diesel?
LEO
Uh, no.
LOUIE
That would be ... swell.
HIPPY
Well, lets go.
Louie walks towards the hippy. Leo brushes off some of the
dust and Johnny puts his gun away and gets up, they follow
Louie. The bag is left in a small puddle of green ink. The
puddle vaguely resembles Australia.
LOUIE
Tell me, is there a bank at the next
town?
